If you're after one of those new HTC Desire C's and don't want to wait until June for the carrier-branded versions, it looks like you'll be able to pick up the device SIM-free in just over a week. British online retailer Clove Technology sends word that it'll be stocking HTC's latest budget handset from next Thursday, May 24. Clove's price is £189.99 including VAT, a little higher than the £170 or so that networks will be asking for, but that's to be expected for an unlocked handset.

The Desire C, which was officially announced yesterday, revives the classic Desire brand and the in a 3.5-inch device that looks like a cross between a One S and a Wildfire S. It's powered by a 600MHz Snapdragon S1 chip, so it's hardly bleeding edge, but the inclusion of ICS, NFC and Beats Audio should give budget buyers plenty to play with.

Apple plans to use a larger screen on the next-generation iPhone and has begun to place orders for the new displays from suppliers in South Korea and Japan, people familiar with the situation said on Wednesday.?

The new iPhone screens will measure 4 inches from corner to corner, one source said. That would represent a roughly 30 percent increase in viewing area, assuming Apple kept other dimensions proportional. Apple has used a 3.5-inch screen since introducing the iPhone in 2007.

Early production of the new screens has begun at three suppliers: Korea’s LG Display Co Ltd, Sharp Corp and Japan Display Inc, a Japanese government-brokered merger combining the screen production of three companies.?

It is likely all three of the screen suppliers will get production orders from Apple, which could begin as soon as June. That would allow the new iPhone to go into production as soon as August, if the company follows its own precedent in moving from orders for prototypes for key components to launch.

Apple’s decision to equip the next iPhone with a larger screen represents part of a competitive response to Samsung.

Samsung unveiled its top-of-the line Galaxy smartphone with a 4.8-inch touch-screen and a faster processor earlier this month.

With consumers becoming more and more comfortable using smartphones for tasks they once performed on laptops, like watching video, other smartphone manufacturers have also moved toward bigger displays.

Aesthetics and design?

A likely shakeup in the design of a larger-screen iPhone could go a long way in boosting its “wow” factor, convincing fans to trade in their old iPhones for new ones, said Shaw Wu, an analyst at Sterne Agee.

“Not only do users pay for features, but they also pay for aesthetics and design. That’s as important, or more important, than features,” Wu said. “People love the current design ? but it’s 18 months old.”

The latest iPhone 4S was introduced in October of last year and essentially has the same form factor as the iPhone 4, launched in 2010.

Samsung, which this year became the world’s largest cellphone maker, sold 45 million smartphones in the first quarter, and sales of the Galaxy phones outstripped the iPhone.

Apple was not immediately available to comment.

Apple’s move toward a larger display for the next generation iPhone was earlier reported by the Wall Street Journal.

In addition to being Apple’s rival, Samsung is also a major components supplier to the U.S. computer, tablet and phone manufacturer.

The share of the production of new screens that go to each of the three manufacturers working with Apple has not been determined, one source said.

Sales of the touchscreen iPhone now account for about one-half of Apple’s total sales, and the phone has been a key source of growth for the company in Asia.

A report in March by a South Korea business newspaper said Apple would use a “retina” display on the next iPhone, the same technology in its latest iPad that enhance image quality.

Suppose you are at home and reading the daily. A wet blotch suddenly appears in the middle of the newspaper and gets alarmingly bigger. You automatically stand, look up, and blink as water droplets land on your eyes. You decide to check the roof for leaks.

Sometimes, leaks aren’t as simple as holes in roofs. Roofs aren’t just sheets of any material attached on your house. Roofs are composed of several layers that provide extra protection for your property. These layers include the shingles, drip edge, underlayment, and deck.

The shingles are the most visible part of your roof. These are usually made of asphalt, wood, and slate. Shingles are individual pieces that overlap one another. The overlapping design keeps rain out by letting water slide easily between the jutting edges, and resists wind since the shingles are tightly packed together. The repair the leaky roof needs is also dependent on the roof construction style.

Underneath the shingles is a black felt material known as the underlayment. If the shingles are damaged in any way, the underlayment provides the second line of defense against the harsh elements. This material is usually made of asphalt or fiberglass substrate.

To keep the underlayment in place, the drip edge is nailed to the sides of the underlayment and the roof. The drip edge is made of aluminum or galvanized steel and protects the roof edges from wind and rain. The deck is the plywood material below all the other parts and keeps the house cool. To install these roofing components, you can hire the services of a Fairfax roofing contractor.

Such experts on roofing Fairfax VA residents rely on first check the attic area. These people look for water, mold, and exposed insulation in the room. They check the roof underside next for any holes. If the holes are close to penetration and intersection points of the roof, then it’s a good indicator that the problem lies with the flashing material. This material is responsible for keeping the roof leakproof.

If the leak is located in other areas, the experts on roofing Fairfax homeowners prefer check the roofing material. The shingles might not be installed properly or might be damaged. The contractors do other checks before inspecting the roof from the outside. It’s generally dangerous to repair roofs due to heights involved, but if you want to try, you can read howstuffworks.com/home-improvement/repair/how-to-repair-a-leaky-roof.htm for tips.

The Navy’s testing range off Fort Lauderdale, where surfacing submarines have surprised boaters for years, will see new types of warships and more activity under a plan for more testing and training along the Atlantic coast.

Although it’s unclear exactly which ships will show up in South Florida, vessels in the works include the Zumwalt-class destroyer, the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford, a troop transport called the Joint High Speed Vessel and the Marine Corps’ Amphibious Combat Vehicle.

But the testing, which the Navy said is essential to the nation’s combat readiness, could cause temporary hearing impairment to thousands of dolphins, whales and sea turtles, as well as permanent damage in some cases, according to a newly released environmental review of the Navy’s plans. Officials said they will use specially trained lookouts and other measures to minimize harm.

“Realistic training is the cornerstone of the success of theU.S. Navy,” said Jene Nissen, project manager for the environmental impact statement. “So when we send our sons and daughters in harm’s way, they can execute the mission that the country has tasked them to do effectively and come back safely,”

Environmentalists say the Navy could have taken steps to avoid testing in the habitat of threatened and endangered species.

“When the Navy intrudes such intense disruption into the environment, it tears at the very fabric of their surroundings,” said Michael Jasny, senior policy analyst for the Natural Resources Defense Council. “Sonar can have a range of effects causing animals to break off foraging, abandon habitat or die on the beach.”

The Navy’s plan calls for an increase in testing and training from 2014 through 2019 across 2.6 million square miles of range complexes and other facilities from Maine to Texas. The work will include gunnery, missile and torpedo training as well as the testing of new warships.

The South Florida Ocean Measurement Facility, located off Port Everglades, will see an increase in ship traffic, mine countermeasure training and the testing of unmanned underwater vehicles, according to the environmental review. The facility encompasses a network of undersea cables and detection devices used to determine the acoustical and electromagnetic characteristics of different ships.

Under the new testing plan, “you will definitely be seeing new classes of ships,” said Roxie Merritt, spokeswoman for Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, which includes South Florida.

The testing here will involve the extensive use of sonar, an essential naval tool since World War II and one blamed for the strandings and deaths of marine mammals.

The work could result in about 200,000 cases of temporary hearing loss among marine mammals, including blue whales, North Atlantic right whales and bottlenose dolphins, with several dozen experiencing permanent impairment, according to the review. Some of these cases could be a single animal experiencing multiple events, the Navy said.

At the South Florida facility, the review estimates the testing of unmanned underwater vehicles and other work could cause temporary impairment in 11,490 cases, with the species including pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins and Minke whales, as well as 12 cases of permanent impairment.

Jasny said the use of sonar could cause many vulnerable species to experience bleeding around the brain, organ lesions and beaching events.

“Hundreds of thousands of marine mammals will be exposed to sonar so loud that it causes hearing loss, and for animals so dependent on hearing for their survival, this could come at a critical point,” he said. “The vast majority will be temporary, but temporary hearing loss can be enormously harmful if the animal is at a critical point in its life history.”

The Navy says any deaths or permanents injuries are likely to affect only tens of animals, with no impact on the populations as a whole, rather than the hundreds of thousands killed by commercial ships, pollution and fishing gear.

“We’ve been conducting these types of training and testing activities with sonar and explosives for 60 years,” Nissen said. “We have coexisted with marine mammals in our training areas. We have not had any adverse affects on marine mammal populations.”

The sonar work could cause temporary hearing impairment to 9,897 loggerhead, leatherback and other species of sea turtle, the environmental review said. Testing unmanned underwater vehicles in South Florida could cause temporary hearing impairment to 2,168 sea turtles, although it was unclear whether this total was included in the larger figure.

The South Florida facility consists of the Port Everglades Shallow Submarine Operating Area, extending from near-shore waters to about eight miles out to sea, a temporary-use surface restricted area extending from one to three miles off shore, the Port Everglades Deep Submarine Operating Area running from nine to 25 miles off shore, and the Port Everglades Restricted Anchorage Area, the location of most of the facility’s undersea electronics.

The Navy is accepting public comments through July 10 on the plan at http://www.AFTTEIS.com and at the following address: Naval Facilities Engineering Command Atlantic, Attn Code EV22 (AFTT ElS Project Managers), 6506 Hampton Blvd, Norfolk, VA 23508-1278.

Engravings found in southwestern France on what was once the ceiling of a cave used by reindeer hunters 37,000 years ago included depictions of animals and female genitalia.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / May 14, 2012

Researchers in France have uncovered what may be the earliest evidence of interior decorating in Europe, engravings on a stone block that date to some 37,000 years ago. The art is associated with the first modern humans to migrate from Africa to Europe ? the Aurignacian culture.

The find ? on the underside of a 1.5-ton limestone slab that once acted as the ceiling of a natural stone shelter ? included depictions of animals, as well as?representations?of female genitalia.

The art is slightly older than the previous underground record-holders, adorning the walls of a cave known as Grotte Chauvet in southeastern France. But that art ? drawings of horses, cave lions, rhino, and other animals ? appears deep inside what would have been a lightly trafficked cave.

The limestone-slab art, by contrast, is tied to a shelter used by reindeer hunters. It’s a site known as Abri Castanet that also hosts the remains of ornament workshops, bone and antler tools, and fireplaces.

In short, the ceiling art was tied into everyday life, notes Randall White, a New York University anthropologist who led the team reporting the results in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Aurignacian art at the site ? which includes stone and bone carvings, beads, and other rock paintings in addition to the wall etchings ? ?is not just about inventing graphic expression, or inventing sculpture,? Dr. White says. It’s part of a larger explosion in innovation that took place in a fairly short time as Aurignacians moved north into colder, unfamiliar territory already occupied by Neanderthals, who had been there for 250,000 years. The rapid evolution in art and personal adornment may have served at least as much as a means of identifying ?them? and ?us? as it did satisfying a craving for Stone Age style.

?We often imagine that it must have been the Neanderthals who had to change in the face of these incoming modern humans,? he says. ?But in fact it looks much more like the modern humans were changing in the face of this well-ensconced population of people who knew the terrain.?

Indeed, he adds, the evidence shows that artifacts associated with the Aurignacians changed more in the first 100 years of their first appearance in the archaeological record than Neanderthal artifacts had undergone in 100,000 years. Innovation and adaptability may well have played a key role in the extinction of the Neanderthal ? a process that took a mere 5,000 years ? and their replacement by modern humans, White suggests.

The innovations ranged from increasingly effective ways to attach spearheads to the spears’ shafts to carving the earliest human-female figurine ?shaped from a mammoth tusk ? and the earliest musical instrument ? a bone flute ? yet found on the continent.

The Abri Castanet site sits on a slope that helps mark the V?z?re River Valley in southwestern France. Although researchers first excavated the site in 1911, no one had worked on it since the mid 1920s. Over the intervening years, it became a garbage dump for a farmhouse located upslope.

Comcast Xfinity TV on Xbox 360

Complaints by Netflix’s Reed Hastings and a handful of politicians must have rankled Comcast CTO Tony Werner, as he just posted a particularly detailed explanation of why Comcast believes the Xfinity TV app on the Xbox 360 isn’t violating net neutrality. We’d previously heard the argument that the Xfinity app’s traffic is simply being routed through Comcast’s internal network and isn’t the same as the Internet data of Netflix, but Werner now contends that the Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) tags that some think are breaking FCC rules by favoring Xfinity video are really just necessary switches. They’re not prioritizing traffic, they’re setting it aside, the claim goes. Of course, Hastings and others believe that setting Xfinity video aside is prioritizing, and Comcast’s point of view sidesteps the practical reality that watching Netflix, Amazon Instant Video or iTunes will lead you closer to that ever-present 250GB cap while Xfinity doesn’t. The FCC during its rulemaking warned against special private services being used as end-runs around neutrality concerns; it’s up to the agency to decide whether or not that’s true here, or whether Comcast is just offering its usual service in a new way.

Comcast fires back over Xfinity TV on Xbox 360, says no way, no how it’s violating net neutrality originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 May 2012 19:04:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Total People in Discussion: 20

Obameter?? I was shocked to see that 91 percent of the 11,484 respondents to a Morning Call Question of the Day last week said they did not favor President Obama?s stance supporting gay marriage.

?? I know we shouldn?t put much stock in any response to one of those Morning Call questions. For whatever reason, I?ve found they tend to skew more conservative than the Lehigh Valley as a whole, based on election results and real polls. Because they?re not scientific, you can?t reliably draw any conclusions from a poll in which everyone is invited to click on an? answer,. You have no way of knowing if it the respondents are representative of the area?s larger population.

?? For example, I think you?ll find that among many young people, gay marriage is a nonissue. Since newspaper readership tends to skew older, those younger people probably were underrepresented.

?? Still, that margin was so wide that it far exceeds whatever that demographic difference would suggest.? Polls show that that the population as a whole increasingly is OK with gay marriage and is pretty evenly divided on the issue. Are people voting differently when they get to do it anonymously?

??? Obama himself described his view as something that has evolved over the years, a process I think many of us have undergone. I like to believe that he?s sincere about that, rather than this was some kind of political calculation, but I have no doubt that politics at least were discussed before he went public.

? ? Either way, I think it was the right decision. If we agree that people don?t really get to choose their sexual orientation ? and I think the science and plain common sense have made that clear ? it?s hard to argue that they shouldn?t be able to formalize their relationships in the same way straight people do.

?? I have no problem with particular religions choosing not to perform or sanction gay marriages. That?s their right. ?But our government needs to get out of the way of people?s pursuit of commitment and happiness ? and out of everyone?s? bedrooms in general.

? What do you think? Are you part of that 91 percent? Do you think that number really reflects the Lehigh Valley?s viewpoint?
